South London based musician Dan Smith has spent the last year writing and recording tracks under the name BASTILLE. The homemade video for “Flaws”, which Dan edited from the classic Terrence Mallick film “Badlands” caught the attention of bloggers at the start of 2011. Racking up over 25,000 hits on You Tube, it has gone on to spawn an unexpected amount of covers from newfound fans around the world.
Flaws / Icarus perfectly introduce BASTILLE’s sound; which contrasts futuristic synths and soaring choral harmonies in “Flaws”, and programmed beats and classical string arrangements in “Icarus”. The songs are great examples of BASTILLE’s ability to produce timeless pop songs with instantly recognisable hooks. Add to this Dan’s distinctive and powerful voice and BASTILLE not only stands out from the crowd, but has the unique ability to appeal to the discerning music lover as well as mainstream audiences.
Bastille’s debut EP was released through Young and Lost in July to much critical acclaim and their live shows go from strength to strength having played over 12 festivals this summer. Watch this space for news of a nationwide tour and a follow up EP
