To celebrate the UK release a launch event will take place on 5th February 2010 in the heart of Clash-land at Inn on the Green, tucked under the Westway between Portobello Road and Ladbroke Grove. Scheduled to appear on the night are: Dubmatix, DubCats, Wrongtom, Citizen Sound, Chomsky Allstars and Don Letts along with special guests.
In the spirit of Joe Strummer’s connection with Reggae and Dub, Shatter The Hotel explores what he once described as the “rasta - punk interface”. The energy of punk fused with the rebellious sound of dub and reggae.
This collection of songs brings together some of (his) Joe’s friends, and collaborators as well as artists and producers that have been touched and inspired by his music and message. Tracks selected from the Joe Strummer and Mick Jones catalogue have been re-interpreted by artists that come from the UK, Jamaica, Canada and the USA.
Don Letts is credited as the DJ that single-handedly turned a whole generation of punks onto reggae. A friend of Joe’s, he is pictured on the cover sleeve of the 1980 release, ‘Black Market Clash’. He opens and closes this compilation alongside Dubmatix and former Big Audio Dynamite band-mate Dan Donovan with their take on London Calling, the track that propelled The Clash’s influence across the pond to the USA. Dubmatix (aka Jesse King) has toured North America and Europe extensively, collaborating with legendary reggae heavyweights such as Sugar Minott, Michael Rose, and Alton Ellis. Shatter The Hotel’s associate producer names London Calling as one of his favourite albums of all-time so reinterpreting the title track with Dan and Don( )was in his words ‘a labour of love’.
Dubmatix - London Calling (Album Version) [feat. Don Letts & Dan Donovan]
The compilation ranges from straight-up roots dub to contemporary reggae sounds to dubbed out punk and dub-house styles including Lost In the Supermarket by South London producer, Wrongtom (Hard-Fi’s tour DJ and remixer), Creation Rockers’ interpretation of Four Horseman and Rock the Casbah by Nate Wize from Toronto who has DJ’d or performed alongside the likes of MIA, Blondie and Roots Manuva. His version features Jamaican vocalist Ammoye.
Joe Strummer’s friend and biographer Chris Salewicz has provided the sleeve-notes for Shatter the Hotel along with renowned photographer, Adrian Boot who has provided the images of Joe.
Proceeds from the sale of this release will benefit Strummerville: The Joe Strummer Foundation for New Music, a registered charity set up by the friends and family of Joe Strummer the year after his death that seeks to reflect Joe’s unique contribution to the music world by offering support, resources and performance opportunities to artists who would not normally have access to them.

THE YALLA YALLAS are a fantastic punk rock ‘n’ roll band from Leeds. Their name was carefully and deliberately chosen as a rallying call to unify. “So long liberty, lets forget you didn’t show. Not in my time” a sentiment expressed on an early Joe Strummer recording, one which spurned him on to form The Mescaleros, and one which struck a chord with the band and their audience.. Some members have appeared in other Leeds based punk rock bands The Dead Pets, 3milehigh and The Gushers. Others have built up a solid reputation as solo performers. All of them now share a common goal to bring anthemic mayhem to wherever they play.

THE TEN-O-SEVENS are real punk rock’n’roll! These four lads combine elements of early punk rock with the sound and attitude of the most obnoxious of garage punk bands. Their songs are fast, loud, nasty, snotty, catchy and sweaty simple chord tight style tunes that will stick to your head like cheap superglue!

THE DEAD BATTERIES return to the Moon as part of their winter tour with local legends the Tagnuts. They are fast, they have a lot to say, and they say it with venom! Great anarcho punx from Ipswich, don’t miss them!

On Saturday 3rd January another great benefit for Strummerville at Komedia, Brighton …
Thanks for your support
The 7th annual Clash tribute night at the Mohawk place.
I love this gig because I get to play really loud punk rock, reggae and dub music… just like Joe would have liked! This is always one of my favorite gigs, especially for the fact that I LOVE spinning discs at the Mohawk Place. For you name droppers, I will be playing tunes by the likes of: The Selector, X-Ray Specs, Special AKA. Stiff Little Finger, Stooges, Mickey Dread, Desmond Dekker, the Exploited, Sex Pistols, Bad Manners, the Damned and more! I better start sifting through the CD collection and get prepared, sort of…
The bands (Rebel Waltz & more) consists of various Buffalo musical greats doing sets of Clash sounds which are usually great! Lotsa fun! Hope to see you there. Drink a Pabst! Musicians include John Lombardo, Chris Malachowski and Jimy Chambers to name a few.
“Come out of the cupboards, you boys and girls,” said the invite. Just a handful of revellers turned up to toast Joe Strummer and support Strummerville (the charity set up by his family and friends), but for those lucky few that packed into The Tabernacle on Sunday night, it was an evening to cherish.
Among those who filled the intimate venue were filmmaker Julien Temple, Carbon Silicon bassist Leo Williams, the Rude Boy movie’s Ray Gange and infamous Clash mate Robin Banks. All were set to enjoy performances from three bands connected with the Strummerville cause. First up were the Savage Nomads, fronted by Cole Salewicz, son of veteran journo and Strummer biographer Chris. It could have been disconcerting playing to an empty dancefloor, but the group piled into their angular psych-flavoured post-punk commentaries with disarming confidence. These Arctic Monkeys-esque rascals were followed by Dan Smith’s one-man band routine. An electric piano, assorted percussion, surreal lyrics and a homemade instrument fashioned from what looked like a detergent bottle were all used to bizarre effect.
Before taking the stage, Alex Thompson of The Riff Raff was basking in semi-disbelief that Mick Jones had borrowed his guitar for tonight’s gig. He talked of how his band had come on leaps and bounds since Strummerville had secured them rehearsal time at Camden’s Roundhouse and studio slots at Notting Hill’s Sarm West. Onstage, the six-piece group, including a besuited cellist, whipped up a joyous storm shot with the kind of diverse musical strains which seem integral to artists affliated with the Strummer camp.
The Rotten Hill Gang were something of a revelation, coming on like Dickensian wide boys transplanted into Notting Hill’s yuppie-besieged artists’ community, flying the neighbourhood’s tattered flag with a splash of old school South Bronx vigour. Bassist Gary Stonadge and guitarist Andre Shapps were in later incarnations of Mick Jones’ post-Clash sonic foragers Big Audio Dynamite, but it still must have come as a bit of shock to see their old boss saunter onstage with a beer and a Telecaster, primed and ready to play. Fronted by rabble-rousing street rapper Reds and propelled by the stunning operatic range of Krystin Cummins, the group powered through a fearsome hybrid of thunderous hip-hop-funk grooves, scathing guitar racket and ingenious vocal interplay (think everything from P-Funk chorale to Music Hall).
In 32 years of seeing Mick Jones take stages everywhere, from New York’s Roseland Ballroom to London’s Roxy, I’ve rarely seen him look so relaxed as he did tonight. Swapping his old Clash strut for a relaxed, syncopated stroll, he smiled his way through the set. I first encountered Mick in Mott The Hoople’s dressing rooms and here he is, 37 years later, joining in a raucous update of Mott anthem All The Young Dudes (‘If Beyoncé can do it…’, he reasoned afterwards). For the finale, the ex-Clash man brought out a guest whose reaction mirrored that of the very surprised crowd. Fun Lovin’ Criminals’ Huey Morgan, in town following a tour of Russia and now roped into a take on Andy Williams’ Can’t Take My Eyes Off You, tore the roof off as The Tabernacle was suddenly gripped by that indefinable, electric Strummer vibe, the atmosphere redolent of Joe’s legendary camp fire singalongs.
The festivities were set to continue through the night at the nearby Globe, another old Strummer haunt, at which point MOJO made its excuses and skipped jauntily into the night, bathed in the sort of positive energy glow that came with every one of those old Strummer encounters. You really should have been there.

THE ITALIAN TRIBUTE TO JOE STRUMMER 2008 5th EDITION
10.000 Days of Rock’n'Roll
SATURDAY DECEMBER 13th 2008 @ESTRAGON Via Stalingrado 83 BOLOGNA (ITALY)
Joe Strummer was the voice, the soul, the political conscience of the Clash, the greatest rebel rock band of all time. Joe Strummer, like few other rock musicians, understood the social function of the music, his capacity to express a popular language, to become an extraordinary communicative vehicle for the young people.
Through his lyrics, with his music, with his contagious spirit, with his social commitment and his sensitivity, Joe Strummer touched millions around the world. From The Clash to The Mescaleros he always tried to find truth and justice, he always worked for a multicultural and multiracial society.
His life remains an enduring legacy of radicalism, defiance, and resistance.
For these reasons he’ll never be forgotten.
Following the great success of the previous year, The Italian Tribute To Joe Strummer returns with the same characteristic of benefit concert, with more bands and more Clash’s song to play. The tribute takes place again in Bologna, the town in which The Clash had their first Italian concert on June 1st 1980.
