Today Strummerville are proud to announce the Shooting Star Poets debut single release “Campaign Time”

The single sees its official release on 5th April and is in support of the Merseyside registered charity SAMM (Support After Murder & Manslaughter) who are launching a new education initiative to raise public awareness of the effects that knife crime is having on families and communities.

For one day only Edgware Road’s Subway Gallery was turned into a makeshift recording studio. On October 30th 2009, commuters and residents were invited to come down to the art gallery, located in the tunnels under Edgware Road, to go underground to record their own music tracks.

Scores of people including buskers and bemused passers-by made their way down to take part in the gallery’s ‘Rocking the Subway’ event.

The gallery was open from 11am but the mass recording did not take place until the afternoon. The aspiring recording artists were also joined by The Musical Differences.

The River Rat Pack Tour is a travelling circus of bands, artists, DJs, promoters, friends and anyone else that wants to join, who just want to play music to as many people as possible.

Embarking from the Flowerpot venue in Camden, a grassroots celebration of noise The River Rat Pack takes its sonic boatshow along the British Waterways, playing a series of free gigs from the roof’s of their barges along with shows in specially selected towns en route. Featuring SixNationState, Nat Jenkins, Beans on Toast, Wild Wolves and The Agitator (formerly Derek Meins), amongst its bill, it once again showcases some of the most incredible new music of any tour in the UK.

Last year The River Rat Pack hosted a who’s who in the best of up and coming folk and British acoustic acts featuring the likes of Mumford & Sons, Golden Silvers, Luke Pritchard of The Kooks, Jay Jay Pistolet and Josh Weller in 2008, and looks to host an equally as forethought and exciting bill this year.

Being the definitive touring music show for new acoustic acts, the expeditions of the River Rat Pack are already well documented. From an impromptu show last summer that saw countless thousands gather around Camden Lock, to more intimate, secret gigs across London’s venues and canals this summer featuring the likes of Hoodlums and festival legend Beans on Toast, the shows were a free-for-all, not to mention free for all.

“A load of amazing bands, some of England’s most beautiful canals and towns, topped off with a load of gigs. What more could you ask for in September?” says SixNationState frontman Gerry, “We’re really chuffed to be part of the barge fest and looking forward to having some messy stories at the end of it. I fully intend on throwing somebody over board”.

Partly inspired by the Festival Express when amongst other great bands The Grateful Dead, The Band and Janis Joplin all toured Canada together on a train, the River Rat Pack creates an original and exciting way of bringing new music to new audiences - travelling on barges through the canals and rivers of England playing free shows from the boats and free shows in venue’s they stop of in along the way.

Like all of the best ideas the River Rat Pack was born through a conversation in a pub between three friends back in winter 2008. The pub in question was the now infamous Nambucca, and the friends were a promoter & DJ Ally Wolf with singer songwriters Beans On Toast and Nat Jenkins.

“We were all discussing what to do with our summer, and how we could do something different than just attend or put on festivals, when the idea of travelling from London to Oxford on barges was suggested”, promoter Ally Wolf recalls. “It just so happened that we had a good friend who owned a barge, and we all knew venue’s along the way and bands that could do it. So an idea, that to some may seem far fetched, turned into nine bands being taken on two barges from London to Oxford playing gigs everywhere we went in the first week of June 2008”.

Now entering their second year The River Rat Pack is ready to set sail again on the 30th of August 2009.

We took our Strummerville bus of talent to a lovely little festival in Dorset over weekend of 7th-97h August 2009 called Endorse It In Dorset.

This was our final big Strummerville Campfire of the 2009 festival season.

‘Rock & Roll’ and ‘Public Library’ shouldn’t mix, one phrase is brash, loud the other sedate and quiet. Yet these two cultures are about to collide. For the first time since the 1850 Library Act that much loved British institution the public library is about gain a loud, revolutionary 21st Century companion.

The Rock & Roll Public Library is Mick Jones’s (The Clash, B.A.D, Carbon Silicon) direct artistic challenge to the likes of the corporate 02 British Music Experience. Rather than let his creative legacy atrophy Jones is reworking (with curator Robert Gordon McHarg III) his own archive collection as a unique ‘guerrilla-installation.’ Set under the Westway motorway in 3000 sq.ft of former office space, Jones’s four-week artistic and civic endeavour will also encourage visitors to enrol, freely interact with the exhibition (Jones began collecting well before he formed The Clash in 1976 to eventual international success, as such it forms an invaluable guide to the influences that informed Jones as a pop-artist). Also uniquely by request users will be able to scan (courtesy Genus, U.K distributor of the Book2net Kiosk) certain objects and via memory stick carry them away. Numerous young-bands will also be recording at the Library (courtesy of Strummerville). Note visitors to the world’s first, resolutely alternative, Rock n Roll Public Library shouldn’t expect peace and quiet.

It’s the weekend! Today, Frontier Backyard play live in Hachioji, a city in the west of Greater Tokyo. However, I have to leave immediately after the show to join Riddim Saunter’s rehearsal, in Shimokitazawa, a neighbourhood in Tokyo known for it’s theatre and music venues…

It’s been a long time since I had Saturday off! I think about heading out for some more fun, but it rains, so I stay at home. I listen to the record I bought the other day in Fukuoka over and over - it’s the new 12″ from “Neoako”…

The Joe Strummer Foundation For New Music has teamed up with the Oh Yeah Music Centre in Belfast to create two new rooms for songwriting and rehearsing.

The culmination of this partnership will be a May 2 opening to show off the new spaces, along with a series of workshops titled ‘Best Practice: Getting The Most From Your Rehearsals’.

This’ll be followed by a Strummerville Sessions gig, with music from The Wild Wolves and Dan Smith from London, plus local acts Panama Kings, Axis Of and a Noel Watson DJ set.

Strummerville celebrates the legacy of Joe Strummer by supporting new music, with grassroots projects in London, Belfast and more.

Strummer was a big fan of Northern Irish punk, once writing an article on the subject, stating:

“When punk rock ruled over Ulster, nobody ever had more excitement and fun. Between the bombings and shootings, the religious hatred and the settling of old scores, punk gave everybody a chance to live for one glorious burning moment.”
