Thanks to everyone who came out to our Winter Sessions last Saturday, to all the bands who played and everyone who made it another night to remember.

Forever Strummer

We are releasing a 10th anniversary Joe Strummer calendar for 2012. Marking 10 years since Joe Strummer’s passing, the calendar will include 12 months of Strummer’s most inspirational quotes, previously un-seen images and hand-written artifacts from his personal archive.

“We are very excited to present this calendar as our first offering for Joe’s 10th anniversary next year. It’s interesting how even ten years after Joe’s passing some of his words of wisdom are more pertinent now than ever before and we hope that this is reflected in the calendar and that it will be celebrated by Strummer fans around the world.” - Strummerville

We will also be releasing two Joe Strummer Christmas cards this year. One is Joe’s last hand-drawn Christmas card (Strummer would send hand-drawn Christmas cards to his close friends every year) and one is this previously never seen before photo of Joe, taken by Bob Gruen in New York, when Joe was giving money to a homeless person.

“I never saw Joe pass a needy or homeless person without giving them something.” – Bob Gruen

Strummerville Music Room at Tilinanu Orphanage in Malawi

Delighted to share photos and this video clip from the opening of the music room at Tilinanu in Malawi.

As there is no formal musical education in schools our music room opens up door ways that Tilinanu never dreamt of before, as well as benefiting the local community too!

Not only were local builders, carpenters and suppliers used at every level, they also put on live shows and offer lessons to benefit and integrate the community.

Teaching has already started at the centre with a donated keyboard as well as 30 recorders, to compliment the many locally made instruments the building houses.

The girls voices echoed out over the entire village and surroundings! The style of the building means it is a great teaching space as it enables a cool, light area to run classes in the red hot sun, but also as rainy season comes it is well sheltered and ventilated.

Local singers and band members within the community have offered their time to teach on a regular basis and put on performances part of helping Tilinanu become self-sustainable.

We were honoured to be able to help this wonderful project and thanks to everyone who has helped us help them.

One love,
Strummerville

Request For Childrens Instruments For Tillinanu

We are delighted that work on the music room at the Tillinanu orphanage in Milawi is now almost complete.

The room will be finished in the next few weeks and will give the children who live there there a space for music and singing and will be a space that will bring that community closer together.

We would love to send them some children’s musical instruments so if you have anything you would like to donate to them please send to:

Happy Birthday Joe

Gone but not forgotten.

Your flags we keep flying,

And your legacy of hope and freedom

Your wise words – we try to heed them,

In campfires and concerts and in the hearts of those who need them.

Delighted To Be Supporting Another River Rat Pack Tour

Strummerville is delighted to support another River Rat Pack Tour this year and we have some of our great bands on-board …

River Rat Pack Tour 2011 in TNT Magazine

The River Rat Pack is an entirely unique concept, taking a group of talented, up and coming musicians on barges to live, play live and collaborate for a week, while cruising from London to Oxford ~ dropping anchor at venues along the way for old school, shambolic pub performances.

Each night you’ll catch the whole line-up live in various venues, while performances atop of the barges during the day will be a perfect chance to swill lashes of Pimms with the traveling festival. The emphasis of the tour is on collaboration and community, and that is extended to the audience as well with all shows being free entry.

Thank you TNT Magazine for making The River Rat Pack the front cover this week!

STRUMMERTIME: Robert Gordon McHarg III EXHIBITION 13-28 MAY

Here’s a great exhibition for all Joe Strummer fans …

McHarg brings Joe Strummer centre stage by covering the gallery with photocopies of Joe’s lyrics, images, thoughts and scribblings. This installation is based on Strummerville’s Rehearsal Rooms that McHarg has had a hand in art directing/installing – The Roundhouse in London, Oh Yeah Music Centre in Belfast – and the “Joe Strummer Past Present & Future” exhibition – London & Tokyo – curated by McHarg.

On the 22nd of December 2009, as a tribute to Joe, McHarg named the Subway Gallery’s pedestrian subway were Strummer used to busk and roam, JOE STRUMMER SUBWAY. In Gordon’s words “It was an act of love and rebellion, for an artist who’s words, music and actions have left me better off.”

Visit The Subway Gallery for more info.

R.I.P. Poly Styrene a true British Queen

A Strummer welcome at the gates of heaven, may she rest in peace.

Interview: Frank Turner celebrates his 1000th gig at Strummerville Spring Sessions

Perhaps a fan on Youtube said it best: “Frank Turner is the best friend you never had.” Indeed, the folk/punk troubadour remains one of the most down-to-earth men in music and an artist whose honest and uncompromising songwriting has resonated with people from all walks of life.

Ahead of his special 1000th gig at Strummerville Spring Sessions, we caught up with him for a chat.

Reaching 1000 gigs in no mean feat by anyone’s standards, let alone by someone still in their 20s. Rewind the clock and tell us about the first one.

“The first solo show I did, I was still in Million Dead. The guys at Small Town America Records were putting on a charity all-dayer at 93 Feet East and asked me if I wanted to play a solo slot, and I said yes. I remember being nervous as hell, and the set was mostly covers because I hadn’t written too many songs of my own then (and wasn’t really planning to). It’s funny to think that it’s now become my livelihood, in a way.”

Has there been one gig that stands out over the 998 others?

“Ha! It’d be impossible to choose one! I’m lucky to say there have been many awesome shows. Things like playing Wembley Stadium stick out in the mind, obviously, but then some of my favourite shows have been in bedrooms and small bars.”

How did you first become involved with Strummerville?

“Through friends, really. Jay (Beans On Toast) is an old compadre, and was actually pretty instrumental in persuading me to pursue this course in music after my band broke up. Hanging with him and the Nambucca crew back in the day, I just crossed paths with the Strummerville camp and made friends.”

Did you ever meet Joe Strummer?

“I did not, alas, which is a shame. I’m a fan, of course.”

Who are you looking forward to checking out at Spring Sessions?

“There are a whole load of bands playing, and I’m not sure I’ve seen any of them live before (tour takes me away from the scene these days, haha). I’ve heard great things about the Barker Band.”

You could probably count the Eton College educated punk musicians on one hand. What was the tipping point for you in the early days? Did you ever feel at odds with your surroundings during your school years?

“Very much so. I was there on an academic scholarship, which meant that socially I was kind of a fish out of water right from the get-go. When I encountered punk rock, aged about 13 or 14 or so, it made a massive amount of sense to me — the rage, the defiance, the rebelliousness, it gave me a lot of help in dealing with the conflicts of my surroundings.”

‘England Keep My Bones’ is due to drop on June 6. Tell us about the album’s creation: how did the writing process go this time around? What was inspiring or affecting you that fuelled the project?

“The album was written on the road, as ever, although this time around I was generally out with the guys in my band, which was great — we had time to really work on the arrangements for the songs this time round, rather than just throwing everything together! We also got to demo the record in El Paso with my friend Jim Ward, which helped a lot. The record is kind of about England, and also about death and what to do about it — but I don’t think of themes and write towards them, they just become apparent after I’m done.”

You’ll be supporting the LP release with an 18-date UK tour throughout May. What’s on the horizon for the second half of 2011?

“I’m playing every goddamn festival in Europe (it feels like!) and then I’ll be in the USA for a while, but at the end of the year I’ll be back for a massive UK and European tour, with some very special guests as well, I can’t wait to announce it!”

Our bi-annual showcases are always real highlights for us and its exciting presenting some of the broad spectrum of the talent we have been helping. Having Frank give us this support is really special for everyone involved, its artists like Frank that make us all keep believing.

Growing out of its West London base, the Strummerville Spring Sessions goes to East London to take-over Hearn Street’s Carpark on Thursday April 21st (Easter Thursday) from 8pm until 6am.

“The 1000th show is going to be a big landmark, and to be honest I was at a loss as to how to mark it – but when my good friends at Strummerville got in touch, it made perfect sense – a massive party to mark the occasion and promote some great causes. What more do you want from a night out?” - Frank Turner
