Can You Hear This – Songs for the Summer 2011: The Joker & The Thief + Bastille

You’d be forgiven for shrinking at the thought of another charity album. I’d much rather donate to charity than listen to Dizzee Rascal rap alongside Busted. However, forget any Band-Aid related nightmares, the Strummerville ‘Songs for the Summer 2011,’ is a compilation that goes over and above the recent, uninspiring Songs for Japan.

Certainly, that was a worthy cause but I can’t fathom why they decided Justin Timberlake’s ‘Like I Love You’ was an appropriate addition to the album. Strummerville, the foundation named after The Clash frontman, Joe Strummer, has released its 2011 charity album.

The foundation is great and endorses musical projects nationwide as well as being a significant sponsor of upcoming bands and a flagship for new bands. Their album is available for free download here. As you’d expect, it features some fantastic British music tailored for summer listening… continue reading

Review: Songs for the Summer

“So, it can be a tough thing to break into the music business – maybe not as hard as it once was when labels and contracts ruled (and when hopes disappeared when demos were tossed away without even a tiny listen), but tough none-the-less. Which is why something like strummerville: the joe strummer foundation for new music is a very cool thing.” read full review

Rock NYC: SONGS FOR THE SUMMER, STRUMMERVILLE COMPILATION

Rock NYC Songs for the Summer Review – excerpt:
“Strummerville, the organization, keeps this Strummer flame alive. As ceremonial offering they have put together a free download of the bands currently being mentored by the Strummerville. I can say there is something for everyone in this 11 song compilation.

This is a great showing of Joes global radio interest. There are some rather brow furrowing songs on this for sure. There are a couple that struck me as highlights “John Mellor” of course, (Strummers birth name) performed by The Vagabonds is cute as is “Don’t Lose Your Mind”, by Great White Whale. Some never got a few notes out but I wont mention them, they may be your favorites.

A worthy cause, a worthy memory and something new for tired ears.”

Frank Turner, Strummerville @ Hearn Street Car Park, London

Excerpt:
“If you’ve not been to Strummerville before, then you need to go. If you’ve not been to a Frank Turner show before, then you need to go. Having them both in one place results in a phenomenal event, but I can’t help but feel that every Strummerville show has this kind of magical atmosphere; with an anything-goes attitude towards musical talent, this line-up would not be repeated anywhere else in England, such is the diversity of genres on display, and it results in a liberating atmosphere that just makes you feel free… This is how music should be enjoyed, with anyone and everyone welcome, and anyone and everyone going home happy.”

This Is Fake DIY: Spring Sessions Review

Of the other bands too numerous to review thoroughly, a couple truly stand out – the electro-pop of Bastille, and the energetic not-quite-sure-what-but-there-was-an-awesome-saxophonist performance by The Joker And The Thief.

247 Video Interview: Frank Turner at Strummerville Spring Sessions 2011

As well as penning a written review of the Strummerville Spring Sessions at the Hearn Street Car Park in East London, we teamed up with video blogger Ohdearyme to bring you a short film about the awesome night.

Ohdearyme caught up with the truly brilliant Frank Turner, who we interviewed for 247 Magazine last year, along with The Joker And The Thief, some generic Strummerville shots and plenty of ramblings from the quick witted presenter Becki Burrows and the randoms she accosted on the streets. If you like what you see then fear not, as you can expect more videos of the same ilk in the coming months!

The Beat Juice: Strummerville Spring Sessions

Anyone who has ever been to a Strummerville campfire or previous Strummerville Sessions will know that at every Strummerville event, there is a special energy. Strummerville’s attitude for events is great music mixed with great people – on stage and off – pure and simple. “The 1000th show is going to be a big landmark, and to be honest I was at a loss as to how to mark it – but when my good friends at Strummerville got in touch, it made perfect sense – a massive party to mark the occasion and promote some great causes. What more do you want from a night out?” – Frank Turner
