Formed in 2009, we are MoonRunners, a female led [indie]-[rock]-[alt]-[punk]-[pop] band from the North East of England. The name of the band stems from the 1979 cult movie The Warriors, “the moonrunners” being one of the gangs from the film.
We’ve played at most of the well known venues and outdoor festivals in and around the region and played with a number of established bands e.g. Shaun (Happy Mondays) Ryder, Canadian rock band The Trews, London based new wave punk rockers, The Duel, London based indie band Bleech as well as a number of well known local bands.
We’re also due to open for McFly at Newcastle O2 Academy in April having successfully been awarded winners status from their online battle of the bands competition.
We’re good friends with punk legend and Sunderland born, Mr. Pete Dee of The Adicts, who over the years has shown great support and passed onto us some valuable advice.
Support and praise has also come from the likes of Barry Hyde (the Futureheads), Andrew “Shovell” Lovell (drummer from M People), Neil “Beast” Bassett (ex Golden Virgins drummer) from Hyde & Beast, and punk rocker Tara Rez (lead singer of London based new wave punk rockers The Duel).
Our style has been compared to that of Paramore with our lead singer having been likened to Hayley Williams style of voice. Others have commented on her singing style resembling 80′s artist Hazel O’Connor, others Debbie Harry, others Chrissie Hynde, and yet others state her voice resembles that of Siouxsie Sioux from Siouxsie and the Banshees, some PJ Harvey, some even Morrissey of The Smiths.
It’s this mix of styles that has spawned our genre of being an [indie]-[rock]-[alt]-[punk]-[pop] band. So who do MoonRunners sound like? Well MoonRunners sounds like MoonRunners!
Our debut single “Mirrors” is due for release first quarter 2012 with some amazing artwork created for us by the internationally renowned graphic artist Mr. Charlie “The Walking Dead” Adlard, known for his work on the award winning comic The Walking Dead – now a major television show.
We’ve also a second single coming out early 2012 called “The Fallen” which is to feature on the soundtrack of a new independent movie due for release summer 2012 called “Amy’s Ghost”.
We’ve had airplay via BBC introducing, Sunderland’s Spark FM and Californian internet radio station Girls Rock Radio.
We were also number one in the download charts on the Joe Strummer Foundation website “Strummerville” for a number of weeks in the Autumn of 2011.
We’re always on the lookout for gigs, be it full on indie rock or even acoustic, so please feel free to contact us (info@moonrunners.co.uk)
