Strummerville comes to Oh Yeah, Belfast

The Joe Strummer Foundation For New Music has teamed up with the Oh Yeah Music Centre in Belfast to create two new rooms for songwriting and rehearsing.

The culmination of this partnership will be a May 2 opening to show off the new spaces, along with a series of workshops titled ‘Best Practice: Getting The Most From Your Rehearsals’.

This’ll be followed by a Strummerville Sessions gig, with music from The Wild Wolves and Dan Smith from London, plus local acts Panama Kings, Axis Of and a Noel Watson DJ set.

Strummerville celebrates the legacy of Joe Strummer by supporting new music, with grassroots projects in London, Belfast and more.

Strummer was a big fan of Northern Irish punk, once writing an article on the subject, stating:

“When punk rock ruled over Ulster, nobody ever had more excitement and fun. Between the bombings and shootings, the religious hatred and the settling of old scores, punk gave everybody a chance to live for one glorious burning moment.”

I’d like to donate a little, which i will as soon as i get this soap box moment out:

i really hope my meager donation goes towards Ulster, Northern Eire specifically, cuz really, they’re just kids that want to enjoy their youth but their country’s past seems to weigh them down.
since i imposed my vacation on all of Ireland last July, I got to chat a bit to N.I. kids when i visited Antrim for all of a week. They kept tight lips (til i pried particulars) bouts the Troubles, which i, as an outsider, know so little about and wanted to know what all the fuss was about.
I concluded that they’re tired of the bullshit politics — which seems to be a real anchor 4 them — but again, that’s just my estimate. They’re genuinely trying to change the world a little bit, cuz that’s all they have, a little bit. None the less, those little sweet hearts seem to give it their all in the music and visionary art worlds, and all the while being kind of lost in limbo between England and Southern Ireland. but still they try anyway and they’re so intelligent and humble particularly in Belfast.
I think we [the U.S.] and the old world countries, are both tired of greedy, ancient, white men running our system. I really hope the youth of our running western world get more encouragement. It’s needed and fast cuz our freedoms are quickly relinquishing.
Thanks for listening. I miss Joe Strummer…
