Strummerville Glastonbury Bandstand

With the aim of continuing to inspire new music making opportunities for artists, Strummerville ran our first ever festival stage at Glastonbury Festival 2008. The STRUMMERVILLE BANDSTAND was an open air stage, fully kitted out with instruments and backing musicians which offered anyone the chance to rock up and play in front of a festival audience.

As well as open mic slots, the stage showcased some of the UK’s best unsigned acts, including bands from our DIY site, and also featured some very special guest slots from friends of Strummerville.

Unsigned Heroes 2008

In 2008, Strummerville teamed up with Harman Pro UK and AKG to run the UNSIGNED HEROES Festival competition.

This offered bands across the UK the chance to compete for a range of amazing prizes including loads of music equipment, free VIP festival tickets and the chance to play on the Strummerville stage at some of the biggest UK music festivals. The monthly heats were held as part of a series of new music nights – The Break in Shoreditch, London which each month featured a special guest slot from friends of Strummerville.

Roundhouse Studios

In 2006, we opened our first Strummerville resource at the Roundhouse in Chalk Farm, London.

What we’ve funded

The Strummerville Studio is an 11m” studio in the Roundhouse Studios that is used for workshops and tuition as well as individual practice. It is decorated with some of Joe’s own handwritten lyrics and memorabilia from The Clash and permanently contains a mixer, amps, speakers, stands, and other equipment and instruments.

Who is it for?

The Roundhouse Studios is for young people 13-25 years old. Unlike typical arts venues with an education department, the Roundhouse Studios is fundamental to the ethos of the whole organisation, providing a space not only for creative thinking, but also state-of-the-art facilities for accessible, affordable and practical training for all types of young people from diverse backgrounds and situations. Many of the young people who take part in projects at the Roundhouse are socially excluded in some way and do not normally have access to creative opportunities.
